Energy Modelling Workshop 2026 | Africa's Energy Transition

Context

Africa's energy sector is undergoing a profound transformation driven by rapid population growth, increasing energy demand, the pursuit of universal energy access, and ambitious climate and sustainable development goals. Addressing these challenges while ensuring a secure, affordable, and low-carbon energy future requires robust analytical tools capable of supporting evidence-based policymaking and long-term strategic planning.

In this context, the Horizon Europe project OpenMod4Africa (OM4A) — Open Modelling Toolbox for Development of Long-Term Pathways for the Energy System in Africa — was launched to advance open-source energy system modelling across the African continent. Funded by the European Commission under the Horizon Europe programme, the project develops an open-access, scalable, and user-friendly modelling toolbox tailored to African energy systems, data availability, and policy priorities.

Building upon established open-source modelling frameworks, OpenMod4Africa supports the assessment of long-term energy transition pathways, renewable energy integration strategies, electrification options, green hydrogen deployment, and decarbonization scenarios. A key pillar of the project is capacity building through close collaboration with African universities, research institutions, policymakers, and energy stakeholders, thereby strengthening local expertise and enhancing analytical autonomy for energy planning.

As part of these efforts, the Energy Modelling Workshop 2026, to be held on 24 June 2026 in Tunis, Tunisia, will bring together researchers, energy planners, policymakers, industry representatives, and development partners to present and discuss the results achieved within the OpenMod4Africa project.

The workshop will showcase applications of advanced open-source energy modelling tools, including GENeSYS-MOD, OpenTEPES, and complementary modelling approaches developed and adapted for African countries. Through a series of presentations and case studies from Tunisia and other African partner countries, participants will explore long-term energy transition pathways, renewable energy integration strategies, hydrogen deployment opportunities, and the role of energy system modelling in supporting national and regional energy planning.
